Four best practice strategies to enhance Employee Engagement levels – as presented during the 8th session of the Africa HR Forum HR Insights Series

All leaders strive to lead and operate a high performance organization that achieves strong financial and non-financial results. A high performance organization is characterized by clarity and coordination, where every employee plays a crucial role in driving the company forward and everything that happens at the individual, group or departmental level contributes to the organization’s goals. It is therefore essential that people understand their roles and how their efforts contribute to producing the desired results, and for the leaders and management to develop and employ the use of a strong performance management system to create the best-practices program that best suits your organization.
It is in this regard that iCUBEFARM, in collaboration with the Ministries of Labor and Public Administration of Equatorial Guinea and the African HR Confederation and the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management Nigeria, organized and hosted its monthly 8th session of the Africa HR Forum – HR Insights Series.
This interactive and highly animated HR Insights Series session was led by the eminent Dr. Charles Cotter, who is an independent global Blended Learning Practitioner and Learning & Development (L&D) Strategist, specializing in management training, with over 20 years’ industry experience in global talent development. Since 2004 he has offered training programmes (online & F2F) and L&D management consultation services in a vast array of disciplines ranging from management; (strategic) HRM; (strategic) L&D; business communication to soft skills for over 159 companies in multiple industries, in both the public and private sectors, in 17 different countries. Dr Charles has also offered public training programs for over 71 reputable local and international training and conference/events companies. Prior to 2004, he was a Training Programme Manager for a 4-year time period at the CTMM, targeting the training needs from supervisory to senior management levels. Prior to this position he was an Assistant Director: Logistics Management at the CCP.
During the 8th session of the HR Insights Series, which was moderated by Dr. Jerry Gule, President of the Institute of People Management South Africa, Dr. Cotter discussed 0n the topic “Performance Management Systems Torpedoing – New Ways for Productivity and Engagement” and we have highlighted, from his presentation, 4 top strategies to ensure high employee engagement:
- Giving employees meaningful voice: facilitating upwards feedback, having respectful, adult to-adult conversations and responding to employee views
- Effective communications that keep employees well informed and reinforce the organisation’s purpose
- Role modelling: employees need to see that managers are committed to the organisation and uphold the values of employee engagement in how they act
- Fair and just management processes for dealing with problems and supporting employee well-being.”
The session was a highly interactive one, where we recorded active participant from a total of 136 professionals operating across all 5 regions of the continent. Additionally, there was physical participation by 20 high-level professionals and CEOs in the presential viewing room in CIPM Nigeria, which was successfully coordinated and hosted under the leadership of the President, Mr. Olusegun Mojeed and the CEO, Mrs. Busola Alofe. The CIPM Nigeria presential viewing room joins its highly requested counterpart, the Equatorial Guinea presential viewing room, which is likewise hosted monthly and attended by EG Government Officials and HR Directors, CEOs etc.
Due to the consistency and increase in participation and demand, amongst other factors, the Africa HR Forum seeks to establish this hybrid event across the continent to ensure inclusivity and accessibility to a Pan-African platform and network for HR practitioners and leaders, whereby they will unite to share practical knowledge and experiences which can be applied for better HR practice in their respective professional milieus.
